Poor Beggar
Poor Beggar in McD
Somewhere in Melaka, a beggar came to McD, perhaps feeling hungry. He was limping, pushing the front door with difficulty and went inside, no one was helping him. Take a short walk inside, and went outside empty-handed. His dirty face shows plain emotions. Perhaps he has been in that situation for so long, he forgot what is shameful, regret and sadness are all about. All he needed was something to fill his rumbling stomach.
To be honest, people around him just couldn't care less about him. He was the most ignored person in the premise, and she wondered, do they purposely ignoring the most ‘different’ person in the room so that they don't have to react on it. Or perhaps, they just couldn’t care less about what is happening around them, all they think is all about themselves. Luckily, no one in the room was feeling disguised enough to chase him out of the premise. They were just a bunch of ignorants.
And somewhere around a corner, a girl was watching him with a wrenching heart. It was a common scene here in Malaysia to see beggars and homeless people, but that night, the feeling was different.
The first thought that came to her mind was, perhaps, this poor guy who was limping through the front door seeking for food is more loved by Allah SWT compared to her who has no difficulty walking and paying for her food and choose anything she wants from the menu. Perhaps, this poor guy is the talk of the town among the unseen (angels) and every second in his life was blessed with sincere du’a (pray) from them, telling him to be patient just for a little while before everything is clear enough for the human eyes to see. Thoughts came rushing to her mind that this poor guy who has been deprived of life’s basic necessity should have no time to do sinful acts compared to her who is blessed with so many things, yet have so little time to be thankful for what she has. Worst, she sometimes took advantage of the blessing and did sinful acts out of it.

The beggar went away, sat at the corner of the building next to the food premise. Staring blankly at the road full of cars rushing everywhere. She tried to gather some confidence left in her heart after so many depressing weeks left her with almost no confidence to even smile. She walks to the poor guy and handed him a burger. She felt something indescribable after that, emotions came rushing in and she almost had tears in her eyes just thinking about what she chose to do that night. She does not care how people perceive her that night, all she wanted to do was to please Him and gain His mercy.
As a human, we can never avoid having prejudgements when we see something; a good thought, a “couldn’t care less” thought or bad thought and prejudice. Indeed, our life is all about making choices. What you cannot see beneath the situation is how the two contrary elements: the mind and the lust, influence your choice. The mind, or we call it ‘aql (wisdom) wants to adhere to Him, yet the nafs’ (lust) is a stubborn entity embedded in your soul, always try to deny Him. With that, every single moment in your life is a war between the two.
Most of the time, it takes hardship for people to appreciate the blessing. I am thankful to Him for all the hardships that have changed me to who I am today. Yet, every day is a struggle to keep the promises. Every day, life is a test and I have to make plenty of decisions on what to choose, and it's very tiring having arguments in my mind. I know He is testing my promises and determination.
Indeed, life on this earth is full of sadness even when you have everything you have ever wanted. But the emptiness inside kills more people than you know. Fill the emptiness in your heart with His love. Know your journey in this life will end soon, the life after death is more important for you to think of, but how much have you invested to ensure a better life after your death where you will be judged by Him and live eternally?
Therefore, try to live this life moderately. Joyous and bad moments will not last. You have to educate your heart to feel blessed in both conditions. What is more important is to take care of your iman as it will provide you with the light you need to walk on the day of judgement. A place where everyone became the most selfish person they can ever become, they abandon everything and everyone even their loved ones. They only think of their fates in front of Him, the Most Justice.
One Day will the Hypocrites- men and women — say to the Believers: “Wait for us! Let us borrow (a Light) from your Light!” It will be said: “Turn ye back to your rear! then seek a Light (where ye can)!” So a wall will be put up betwixt them, with a gate therein. Within it will be Mercy throughout, and without it, all alongside, will be (Wrath and) Punishment! (57:13)
